Permacomputing Workshop: Noise Boxes & Hardware Hacking
It's time for the next workshop in our Permacomputing series! This time, we will build a standalone electronic and acoustic Noise Box! The time of extreme signal manipulation has arrived...
This workshop series is presented and hosted in cooperation with Acid Solder Club!
First, using a DIY soldering kit, we will be building a simple function generator that can output all kinds of classic waveforms. These waveforms can then be altered using simple filters, body contacts, can be used with video synthesis to cross-modulate each other. Also, we can have them affect and modulate other sound/video machines, or be distorted or fed back using pickup mics. After soldering our simple function generators, we will take a deep dive in a pile of re-useable electronic materials. These can vary from broken audio equipment, keyboards, and kitchen appliances to pcb's and other discarded devices cast out by our fast-tech society.
📍 CCU Studio, Vlampijpstraat 84, Utrecht
📅 16 March 2024, 13:00 - 17:00
🎫 Regular €55 / Student €35 (includes €15 material costs)
During the workshop, soldering kits and essential components will be provided. Additional electronic materials will be available on-site for participants to utilise and take home after the workshop. After the first building part, we will also focus on the performative and aesthetic or construction side of your noise box, and push the limits of electronics and design! Please bring any strange or cool looking cases, cigar boxes, metal canisters, empty soup cans, toy baby heads, springs or obscure potential synth cases with you! The weirder the better!
Expect some serious soldering, drilling, constructing and destroying to create a variety of Noise Boxes that can be used in live performance, studio setups and/or your never ending circuit bending enterprises. We will quickly go trough the soldering part to have a lot of time for the noise box construction.
No prior knowledge is needed about soldering, sound, circuit bending or noise boxes to join this workshop. You will learn everything here! If you can, feel free to bring your own soldering iron and equipment.
