Small AI Lab - shared practices for sustainable machine learning
Hoe kunnen we met machine learning werken op een manier die ethisch, lokaal en geworteld is in zorg voor de gemeenschap? In dit tweedaagse lab openen makers, kunstenaars en onderzoekers hun praktijk rondom het werken met kleine datasets en kleinschalige AI. In plaats van groter, sneller en zwaarder te denken, verkennen we wat er mogelijk wordt wanneer je juist kiest voor klein werken.

Dag 1 heeft de vorm van een open bijeenkomst. Via gezamenlijke presentaties en gesprekken krijg je inzicht in hoe creatieve makers duurzame en transparante benaderingen van machine learning ontwikkelen. Ivan Paz, Lina Lab en Computational Mama delen hun ervaringen, en er is ruimte voor anderen om bij te dragen.
Op Dag 2 wordt het lab hands-on. Samen verkennen we tools en methoden die zorg, helderheid en creatieve autonomie centraal stellen boven schaal en extractie. Je leert hoe kleine datasets functioneren, wat deze aanpakken mogelijk maken en wat ze bewust níet doen. We kijken naar hoe kunstenaars en technologen verantwoordelijke, gemeenschapsgerichte AI vormen als alternatief voor grote tech-infrastructuren die putten uit kunstenaars, gemeenschappen en het milieu.
Dit lab maakt deel uit van een doorlopend gesprek over het bouwen aan AI-praktijken die soeverein, duurzaam en collectief zijn. Het is een communityprogramma waar iedereen aan kan deelnemen. Je volgt allebei de dagen en betaalt alleen voor de lunch.

How can we work with machine learning in ways that are ethical, local, and grounded in community care? In this two day lab, makers, artists, and researchers open up their practices around working with small datasets and small scale AI. Instead of thinking bigger, faster, and heavier, we explore what becomes possible when you choose to work small.

Day 1 takes the form of an open, meetup style session. Through shared presentations and conversations, you gain insight into how creative practitioners are developing sustainable and transparent approaches to machine learning. Ivan Paz, Lina Lab, and Computational Mama share their experiences, and there is space for others to contribute.
On day 2 the lab turns hands-on. Together we explore tools and methods that prioritise care, clarity, and creative autonomy over scale and extraction. You learn how small datasets function, what these approaches make possible, and what they deliberately choose not to do. We look at how artists and technologists are shaping responsible, community-based AI as an alternative to big tech infrastructures that extract from artists, from communities, and from the environment.
This lab is part of an ongoing conversation about building AI practices that are sovereign, sustainable, and shared. It is a community programme where everyone can take part. You join the full two days and only pay for lunch.
