Pen-plotting Workshop
Ever wanted to turn a few lines of code into physical artwork? In this workshop, you’ll discover the magic of pen-plotters, machines that transform digital designs into real ink drawings. Using OPENRNDR, a creative coding framework, and Kotlin, the programming language behind it, you’ll learn how to generate patterns, experiment with algorithmic design, and translate code into beautifully plotted visuals.
Guided by Berlin-based artist and creative coder aBe, you'll explore everything from precise geometric compositions to chaotic, organic textures. Whether you prefer structured designs or unpredictable generative art, pen-plotters offer a unique way to bring your digital work into the physical world.
You don’t need to be a coding wizard, but some experience helps. If you’ve ever dabbled in p5.js, Processing, or similar tools, you’re good to go. Not there yet? There’s still time to play around before we start!
All you need is a laptop that can run OPENRNDR. Most computers from the past decade will do just fine. We’ll provide a projector and internet access. There’s plenty of room to experiment, ask questions and share ideas. No worries if you get stuck, chances are someone else has the same question, and figuring things out together is half the fun. 😊
Your guide for this workshop, aBe, has been exploring the magic of generative art since 2011. His work blends mathematics, randomness, and geometry, taking shape in prints, live performances, and interactive installations. Inspired by nature and the patterns hidden in the world around us, he uses code to remix reality into something entirely new.
